Frequently Asked Questions
How does IPL work?
Intense Pulsed Light or IPL therapy is a non-invasive cosmetic treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to improve the appearance of the skin.
Using a handheld device, light is applied directly to the skin in quick pulses to selectively heat targeted areas and specific chromophores in the skin like melanin and haemoglobin.
When heated, the cells or structures are damaged or destroyed, stimulating a natural healing response.
Is the treatment truly pain-free?
Generally, yes. Many say it feels like being flicked by a rubber band with some moderate heat.
How many treatments will I need?
This will depend on the treatment area and skin concern, for example, whether we are targeting acne, hyperpigmentation or vascular lesions. In your cosmetic consultation, we will gain a better understanding and be able to give you an idea of how many sessions you’ll need and how frequently.
How soon after will I see results?
Results vary from person to person but some see results immediately, while others require a full course of treatments to see effects.
How long will results last?
This depends on what skin concerns we are treating. For example, after a full course of treatments for hyperpigmentation, results may last up to 6 months before a maintenance treatment is recommended. Again, in your cosmetic consultation, we will be better able to gauge this.
What are aftercare instructions for this treatment?
It’s essential to allow your skin to heal and breathe without any potential irritants so we recommend you avoid applying makeup or using harsh products for the first 1-2 days.
Additionally, use gentle and mild cleansers and moisturisers and apply an SPF30+ sunscreen to keep your skin clean and hydrated.
What activities should I avoid?
It’s important to avoid overheating in the first few days post-treatment to manage any redness, tingling and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation so limit time in the sun, take cooler showers and baths and take it easy while exercising.
